Scoil Naomh Bríd Through the Decades

Scoil Naomh Bríd opened its doors in September 1971, with four teachers and 125 pupils. Prior to the existence of Scoil Naomh Bríd, the Muff children of the Ishakeen Parish were educated in Carnamoyle NS (circa 1848), Ture (Gortin) NS (1872) and Hollybush PS. Smaller schools were being amalgamated at the time and in 1969, Dr Mc Gurk, curate in Drung, arranged for the children of Muff attending Hollybush PS to attend school in Ture and Carnamoyle for a few years to learn Irish before attending the future school in Muff. With the closure of Carnamoyle NS and Ture NS, the new village school of Scoil Naomh Bríd was born.

In 1970, a suitable site for the school was identified, work began and the first pupils entered the school in September 1971. Mr Tommy Byrne was the first principal, having moved from Carnamoyle NS with Mrs Mary Haughey. Mrs Eileen Gormley and Mr Joe Mc Geady came from Ture NS to make up the rest of the school staff.

Staff Through the Decades

Many staff have passed through the school doors in its 50 year+ history. The school and education have changed a lot since 1971. A four teacher school in 1971 has now expanded to become a twelve teacher school with an administrative principal. We also have a school secretary, two Special Needs Assistants, two cleaners and a caretaker. How things have changed.
