The Schools’ Folklore Collection

The Irish Folklore Commission, in conjunction with 5,000 primary schools, ran a fantastic scheme for collecting local history, folklore and local traditions from 1937-1939. 50,000 senior primary school children recorded over 750,000 pages of valuable local information.

Topics included oral history, topographical information, folktales and legends, riddles and proverbs, games and pastimes, trades and crafts. The children recorded this material from their parents, grandparents, and neighbours. You can recognise many familiar names here. Enjoy reading about our community in the past.
